Hokkaido Photo Tours are always a tour de force of wildlife species, including birding photographers.  The Steller's Sea Eagle, the White-tailed Eagle, and, of course, the snow ballerina, the Red-crowned crane are all parts of JDS's annual Hokkaido Winter Wonderland photo tour.  However, there are also other avian inhabitants that spice up any Hokkaido Photo Adventure.

The Japanese Pygmy woodpecker or (Yungipicus kizuki) is a species of woodpecker, which is found in coniferous and deciduous forests in Japan and neighboring nations. This species has also been placed in the genus Dendrocopos or Picoides.

Our veteran photo workshop leader photographed this Japanese Pygmy woodpecker while leading my annual winter wonderland Hokkaido Photography Workshop/Tour in 2019. He used a Nikon D850, lens Nikor 800mm; my setting were F/8, 1/2500s, ISO 800.
