The Sapporo Snow Festival varies from its Tokyo and Kyoto counterparts.  Kyoto and Tokyo matsuris focus on Japan and its rich history, an important part of preserving Japan’s rich tradition, but Sapporo’s Snow Festival is a spectacle of an entirely different type.

The festival started from local Sapporo students decorating their local park, Odori Park.  The park is now the locus for the festival that happens every February.  The event boasts more than 2 million visitors from around the world.  The festival also invites teams from 12 other countries to compete for the most awe-inspiring ice sculpture.  Each ice sculpture is a new photo op, and, of course, the park is immaculately lit, so you can take amazing pictures from all over the park.  Some of the sculptures reach 25 meters in width and over 15 meters tall!  The craftsmanship required to create these masterpieces is truly something to behold and photograph.

Your Japan Dreamscapes (JDS) Sapporo Photo Tour leader will use his or her years of experience to help you find some new perspectives from which to enjoy the magnificent ice sculptures and assist you in taking home photographic mementos of your time spent marveling at the icy modeled perfection of Sapporo's Snow Festival.
