Hokkaido Photography is commonly associated with the winter season, and there’s an excellent reason why.  If you do a quick Google search for ‘Winter Photo Tour’ or ‘Winter Photography Spots’ many locations in Hokkaido emerge in the top 10, and, depending on which site you are perusing, Hokkaido Photo Spots will be ranked Number 1.

One feature of Hokkaido that repeatedly takes the top position for photographers is drift ice.  In the Sea of Okhotsk along Abashiri City is well known for the dense dirt ice, being the southernmost point for this type of ice, similar to the same type in the Arctic.  Steller’s Sea Eagles frequently come to feed in areas with think drift ice or pack ice, and with excellent timing and some tips from your Japan Dreamscapes (JDS) Photo Tour Japan Leader, you can take photos of the eagles feeding while they forage for their prey in the crevices and open areas amidst the ice floes.  On rare occasions, you can hear the Steller’s Sea Eagles tearing the flesh of their piscine prey as you take the photograph, freezing that primal moment in time with a once in a lifetime photo.  The eagles are on the endangered species list, and no one knows when the changing climate and decreasing numbers of these eagles will eliminate the photo ops in the winter months?  Seize the opportunity and book your tour today!
