Wildlife Photography Like No Other: Home to the World’s Largest Owl

Hokkaido is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike. Among the island’s most iconic species is the elusive Blakiston’s Fish Owl (Ketupa blakistoni), revered by the Ainu as a guardian spirit. This endangered owl is the largest in the world, with males weighing up to 8 pounds and females reaching over 10 pounds. Spotting and photographing these nocturnal hunters requires expertise and local knowledge—qualities I bring as your guide with years of experience leading Hokkaido birding workshops.

Beyond the Blakiston’s Fish Owl, Hokkaido’s wilderness offers unparalleled opportunities to photograph the Steller’s sea eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus), Ezo red foxes (Vulpes vulpes schrencki), Ezo Risu (Sciurus vulgaris orientis), a subspecies of red squirrel, and the world’s largest herd of Ezo Sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis). With a bit of luck, you might even capture the majestic whales and playful sea otters (Enhydra lutris) that grace Hokkaido’s waters.
